The plume was rising to Mary Jane's final meeting with the [[Great Smoke|GreatSmoke]]. She had to visit [[that cabin|Cabin]].
Mary Jane picked a bud straight from the trees. She [[crumbled them up|Crumbled]], grinding them as well as the finest [[grinder|Grinder]].
The haze cleared, and Mary Jane found herself at [[the top of a tree|Top2]].
She didn't want to [[think about that|Think]] now, didn't want to think about [[the water|Water]], just wanted to [[take a hit|TakeAHit]].
Mary Jane first got high a couple of weeks after [[it happened|Creek]], and in those moments, she felt the first glimpse of peace. She flew away from her problems and found her high, and it was there that she [[remained|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane knew something about [[that|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane rolled the joint perfectly, and she put it to [[her lips|TakeAHit]].
And inside her were a thousand baby dragons, and they flew to the far corners of the Earth, and they defended the trees, and they kept the flame and defended the high until [[this day|Crumbled]].
She reached for [[the book|420CodeEnd2]]...
“Let trees have leaves,” that's what the [[420 Friends|420Friends]] said, but Mary Jane wasn't one of the 420 Friends, and that's not how she felt. The idea of Jackie being out there, at a barbecue with her [[neighbors|Neighbors]], it made Mary Jane sick to her [[stomach|Stomach]].
It was said that there was once a [[Great Dragon|Dragon3]] who soared above the sky and breathed fire and that he exhaled the [[Great Smoke|GreatSmoke]].
The Great Dragon flew the skies for generations, the defender of trees, the keeper of the flame, the protector of the high. But [[then|Dragon4]]...
And [[then|Reggie6]]...
Like smoke falling down. You couldn't get around it. It was one of those things, one of those things, one of [[those|Treehouse2]]...
Mary Jane's Woods
It was said, though Mary Jane did not hear it, that she would one day lead the people in [[a failed revolution|Revolution]] of the 420 Code. If Mary Jane had heard this, she would have laughed, because revolution was the furthest thing from her mind, and [[the 420 Code|420Code]] was something she would never read.
The circle spins left, but from the center of the circle, it turns right. This is explained in the [[Metaphysics|Metaphysics]], as we all know.
But [[who|Who]] was he?
But [[something|Treehouse2]] was.
Years of effort had gone into that, twisting the branches on her own. This [[treehouse|Treehouse2]] was not an [[accident|Accident]].
The Great Smoke said, “The 420 Code is [[not what it seems|Treehouse2]].”
It had been a long time since she'd seen Jackie, she wondered what had happened to [[her|Jackie2]].
Mary Jane wandered away from the creek and out into the woods. She passed [[trees|ActualTrees]], her [[treehouse|Treehouse]], <<if $cabin is true>>a [[cabin|ActualCabin]], <<endif>> and a [[meadow|Meadow]].
The pipe wasn't physically broken. It just held too many [[memories|Memories]].
<<print either("Mary Jane opened her eyes and exhaled.","Mary Jane watched the smoke pour out of her lips. When it faded, she found herself in her treehouse.","When the smoke faded, Mary Jane found herself in her treehouse.","Mary Jane coughed when she exhaled, bending over. When she stood up, she was in her treehouse.","Mary Jane thought about her treehouse. It was almost as if she was there.","Mary Jane exhaled and dreamed her way to her treehouse.")>>\n\nShe was standing in her treehouse. There was a [[railing|Railing]], several [[potted trees|Trees]], a [[safe|Safe]], and a [[zipline|ZipLine]]. The [[woods|Woods]] were below her.
And then she woke up in [[bed|Conclusion]].
The way she [[left|Vision6]].
She looked over at the creek, the [[waters|Creek-Waters]] were blue and sparkling.\n\n<<if visited()>>She walked through the [[woods|Creek-Woods]].<<else>>Her [[joint|JointCreek]] had died.<<endif>>
Mary Jane walked to the middle of the meadow and held out her hand. A joint tied to a balloon floated down into it. She [[took a hit|TakeAHit]].
The way she made her feel like everything was going to be [[all right|Vision5]].
She knew if she ate from the tree, she would remember.<<set $appletree to true>> but she didn't [[know what|AppleTale]].
The way she would [[laugh|Vision4]].
She climbed a tree and looked out at the woods. She would either [[smoke|TakeAHit]] or [[climb down|Woods]].
The Great Smoke said, “You must [[remember|Treehouse2]].”
“Hmm. I don't know why I should tell you. You'll have to find it yourself in the trees.”<<set $inthetrees to true>>\n\nAnd suddenly, you [[open your eyes|Treehouse2]].
That's what they called themselves, at least, though Mary Jane didn't know if there were more than 420 of them, or less. All Mary Jane knew was that they carried their [[stupid green book|420Code]] in their back pockets.
They reminded her of something, and if she squinted, she could make it out, but then, hidden beneath the waters, she saw...\n\n[[A key|Creek-Key]].
Maybe she didn't want to remember. Maybe she wanted to stay in her [[treehouse|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane longed to eat from the [[apple tree|AppleTree]].
Mary Jane had once owned a grinder that could grind anything. Once, she ground a [[broken wooden pipe|Pipe]] into dust and mixed the dust with her bowl, giving the pipe the send off it [[deserved|Lighter]].
Mary Jane looked just like the woman. Especially in [[the eyes|OpenBox-Eyes]].
Mary Jane had heard of people being arrested, people going to [[jail|Jail]]. She'd hear about it when she went into town, but then she'd go back to her [[treehouse|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane wandered into the [[woods|Woods]].
Mary Jane had [[the Gift|OpenBox-Gift]]. She knew it. But she didn't know what the Gift was, or how to use it. She stared at [[the note|OpenBox-Note]].
“Well, then, tell me who you are.”\n\n[[“My name is Mary Jane.”|InsideMan-Mary]]\n[[“My name is Jackie Blunt.”|InsideMan-Jackie]]\n[[“I'm exactly who you think I am.”|InsideMan-Mary]]

Every day, they regrew around her, a place from which she could not escape because she did not want to [[leave|Leave]] it.
The man said, “I am the keeper of the stash, and I have kept it for years.”\n\n[[“What stash?”|InsideMan-What]]\n[[“Where is it?”|InsideMan-Where]]\n[[“Give it to me!”|InsideMan-What]]
The Legends of Mary Jane? She reached for the book, and then decided some things were better [[left alone|Leave]].
But freed from what? She could not recall.\n\nShe found herself in the [[woods|Woods]].
<<print either("A leaf broke off its branch and was carried through the woods on the wind, finally coming to a rest at [[Mary Jane's tree|Start]].", "A leaf carried Mary Jane up to her [[treehouse|Treehouse2]].")>>
<<if visited("Reggie14")>>Mary Jane opened the safe with the combination she had learned in town, or in her vision of town, and the safe [[opened|Safe2]].<<else>><<if $key is true>>The safe was a combination lock and didn't use a key.<<else>><<print either("The safe was locked. Water, you know? You could [[float on it|Gently]] or [[sink beneath it|Sink]]. It could [[carry a child gently|Gently]], or toss you against [[the rocks|Rocks]].
[[Two seconds|2]].
Empty. Empty. [[Empty|Empty2]].
The Great Smoke was the source of all highs, the inhale and the exhale, [[the spark|Spark]] and [[the ash|Ash]]. The Great Smoke has been inside all of us, and yet we are all [[a part of it|TakeAHit]].
Mary Jane stared into the waters of the creek and <<if $key is true>>[[took a hit|TakeAHit]]<<else>>got lost in the [[ripples|Creek-Sparkles]]<<endif>>.
The town was where the [[cops|Cops]] were. It was where Mary Jane once [[lived|Lived]], too. Before everything that happened.\n\nBut she didn't like to [[think about that|Think]].
Treetops, stretching out to [[the town|Town]]. Mary Jane wondered how many she had [[climbed|Top]].\n\nIn the distance, she could make out [[a cabin|Cabin]] with a [[plume of smoke|Plume]] rising from its chimney.
Mary Jane bit into the apple and it was like someone cleared the smoke from the bong of her mind, and she remembered [[vivid images|Vision1]].
<<if visited("ManInside") is 0>>Inside, there was a fire burning in the fireplace, nothing but trees being burned, and the smoke was thick in the air.\n\nIn the middle was a chair. In the chair was [[a man|ManInside]]<<else>>The man is gone, and his chair is empty. But you see [[books|Books]] on the wall.<<endif>>.
Mary Jane knew something. She could [[see it|OpenBox-Vision]].
“The green is the ultimate good,” said the Great Smoke, “for it is potential. You have great potential, Mary Jane. You are very green, and you will [[change the world|Revolution]], and make it new again. But first, [[you must remember|Treehouse2]].”
“No,” he said, “but you knew her, once. And now, all she had was a [[combination|Treehouse2]]...
And then, suddenly, the image of a [[house in town|Treehouse2]].
Given her [[hope|Reggie11]].
<<if visited() gt 1>>She would [[make herself|Town]].<<else>>No, she wouldn't. [[Could she|Wanted]]?\n\nShe thought about [[smoking|Lighter]].<<endif>>
[[Freedom|Reggie13]]
[[And then taken it away|Reggie14]].
Revolution? The [[cops|Cops]] never slept. Mary Jane knew that, and when you went into [[the town|Town2]], you had to be careful. They could do you great harm, though Mary Jane had never [[been harmed|Gently]] and knew she [[never would be|Jackie]].
Just an ordinary reggie neighborhood, boring and empty, just like all the [[other neighborhoods|Town2]].
<<print either("Mary Jane sucked on the joint and heard the trees sizzle.","Mary Jane smoked and the trees burned.","Mary Jane puffed on her joint.", "While Mary Jane smoked, she thought about trees.")>> She felt the smoke in her lungs, and she <<if $smokedonce is true>>[[held it in|1]]<<else>>held it for [[five seconds|5]]<<endif>>.
Like smoke through the air, floating and bobbing and coming up to shore, safe, unharmed. [[Heart whole|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane had once read a copy of the Metaphysics. She had forgotten everything in it, but the images had never left [[her mind|Mind]].
The man said, “Yes, I should have believed you, that you would return for the stash.”\n\n[[“What stash?”|InsideMan-What]]\n[[“Where is it?”|InsideMan-Where]]\n[[“Give it to me!”|InsideMan-What]]
The men in suits gathered below, and they discussed, and they declared, "We must kill the dragon." And they took arms against the dragon, and they slew her with steel and drowned her in water, and they [[cut open her belly|Dragon5]]..
<<print either("Mary Jane wandered through the woods.", "Mary Jane stepped through the woods.", "Mary Jane floated through the woods.", "The woods were wonderous, Mary Jane thought. She could always find her way to her [[treehouse|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane took a hit of her joint and held it in.\n\nThen, she [[exhaled|Exhale]].
In particular, there was [[one apple tree|AppleTree]] in the middle of the woods, but Mary Jane had always gotten a [[weird feeling about it|WeirdFeeling]].
5moker
They were the eyes of a woman with [[vision|OpenBox-Vision]].
Memories, memories, so many, so few. Her [[parents|Parents]],<<if visited("Jackie")>> <<else>> [[Jackie|Jackie]], <<endif>>her [[first time being high|FirstTime]].
Mary Jane looked out and thought about one tree in particular. She remembered climbing it so vividly, putting on arm in front of the other, one leg in front of the other, and then, she was at the [[top of it|Top2]].
Mary Jane stood in [[the woods|Woods]] beneath her [[treehouse|Treehouse]], smoking a [[joint|Lighter]].<<loopsound "RAIN.mp3">>
Mary Jane had once held a copy of [[the book|http://www.reddit.com/r/420Code]] in her hands. She had set it on fire and used it to light her [[blunt|TakeAHit]].
Mary Jane had bent the [[branches|Branches]] of this tree for a long time, so that now they curved around pots of [[trees|Pick]] and held them secure.
<<if $key is false>>Something about a creek, [[but then|Treehouse2]].<<else if $inthetrees is false>>The cabin, she knew. [[Then|Treehouse2]]...<<else $appletree is false>>The [[munchies|Munchies]].<<else>>She needed to visit the town, she thought as she [[exhaled|Treehouse2]]<<endif>>
A bong, thought Mary Jane. She had one of her those back at her treehouse, she thought. Maybe that's what was [[in the safe|Safe]].
<<if previous() is "Plume">>She wanted to go there, but where was it? Somewhere in the [[woods|Woods]].<<else>><<if $inthetrees is true>>She had been there. She had seen [[him|Him]].<<else>>It was out there. Somewhere in the [[woods|Woods]].<<endif>><<endif>>

She still remembered her house, [[her neighborhood|Neighborhood]], the neighbors, the people. She could find her way there, she thought, if she [[wanted|Wanted]].
Which reminded Mary Jane that she had the munchies. There were beautiful [[fruits and vegetables|FruitsVeggies]] in the woods, but if she wanted a real snack, she needed to sneak into [[town|Town]].
“That's very sweet of you, Mary Jane. Let me tell you a secret: the stash is in the trees.”<<set $inthetrees to true>>\n\nAnd then, you were [[back|Treehouse2]].
She climbed up to her treehouse. There was a [[railing|Railing]], several [[potted trees|Trees]], a [[safe|Safe]], and a [[zipline|ZipLine]].
[[Trees|Reggie12]]
A little green book full of parables and rules. Mary Jane would rather stay in her [[woods|Woods]].

Mary Jane got out her lighter. She flicked the switch, tickling the <<if visited("Dragon")>>dragon inside<<else>>[[dragon inside|Dragon]]<<endif>> and emitting a [[flame|Flame]].
And then Mary Jane remembered [[what had happened|Reggie1]].
<<if $appletree is true>>Sometimes she [[passed through|Town2]]...<<else>>But she didn't want to, [[not yet|Treehouse2]].<<endif>>
[[Three seconds|3]].
Mary Jane licked the joint shut and put it to [[her lips|TakeAHit]].
And Jackie had pulled her [[out of that|Reggie10]].
She had snapped [[the pipe|Pipe2]] into pieces, ground them up, smoked them. When she did, she felt [[freed|Freed]].
Mary Jane took a hit and slid down the zipline, exhaling a long plume of smoke before she touched down on the [[other side of a creek|Creek]].
Nothing more than a [[puddle|Reggie4]].
It had been [[a clear day|Reggie2]].
Well, that was the end, [[really|Reggie7]].
Her parents were [[gone|Reggie8]].
Tires [[screeching|Reggie5]].
Mary Jane had once heard about [[the dragon|Dragon2]], and she had thought of that ever since.
“We'll be together forever,” Jackie had [[said|FinalVision]].
But words were ash. Mary Jane knew that [[now|Vision13]].
“We'll stay here forever,” Jackie had [[said|Vision12]].
And she flew into [[these woods|Vision11]].
Mary Jane had a dream of jail once, of herself, trapped in a box, unable to see the sky, trapped, cut off from the [[Great Smoke|GreatSmoke]].\n\nAnd then, she [[woke up|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane stood before the cabin. <<if $inthetrees>>No smoke bellowed from its chimney. Not anymore.<<else>>It looked abandoned, except for the smoke drifting upward from the chimney.<<endif>>\n\nThe door was [[open|Inside]].
Mary Jane wasn't sure what time it was anymore. The days passed, of course, and the trees grew and were burnt and then rose again, but the accumulation of these things she did not recall.\n\n[[She lit her joint|TakeAHit]].
Mary Jane touched her [[joint|TakeAHit]] to the flame.
<<if visited("AppleEating")>>Mary Jane looked at the apple tree and sighed with the weight what she could no longer [[forget|Woods]].<<else>><<if $appletree>>In the middle of the meadow was an apple tree. Scattered [[showers|Reggie3]].
She had [[climbed|Climb1]] hundreds of these trees, smoking on top of them. She knew these woods, and yet, they were [[new to her|New]].
A black book, full of arcane drawings and text-heavy pages. Mary Jane couldn't make heads or tails of it, so she [[took a hit|TakeAHit]].
Mary Jane could see her [[treehouse|Treehouse2]], a long way away, and she could see the [[town|Town]], but she could also see a [[meadow|Meadow]].
Four books: [[The 420 Code|420Code-Library]], [[The Legends of Mary Jane|Legends-Library]], [[The Book of the Bong|Bong-Library]], and [[The Metaphysics|Metaphysics-Library]].
That's what they called their [[book|Book]], and Mary Jane had flipped through it, but she'd never read it. Never wanted to, really, thought it was a bunch of gibberish. Something that people read to [[elevate|TakeAHit]] their lives, while she ran through the [[forest|Woods]], in love with life.
“Of course not,” the Great Smoke replied. "[[Not yet|Treehouse2]]."
Mary Jane walked through town, guided as if smoke through glass, <<if $appletree is true>>until she stood in a [[regular suburban lawn|Reggie]] in front of a [[regular suburban house|Reggie]].<<else>>but she saw nothing interesting and eventually returned to her [[treehouse|Treehouse]].<<endif>>
They always [[leave|Leave2]].
Was this how she saw the [[Great Smoke|GreatSmoke]]?
Up up up and over the treetops and into the sky until she stood before the Great Smoke. Inside the box were photographs, Polaroids of a smiling couple. The [[woman|OpenBox-Woman]] was [[pregnant|OpenBox-Pregnant]]. The [[man|OpenBox-Man]] had a beard. Beneath them was [[a note|OpenBox-Note]].
And she was [[afloat|Reggie9]].

Mary Jane dove into the water and grabbed the key at the bottom. Then, she swam over to the other side and [[climbed out|Creek-Woods]].<<set $key to true>>
Was she still out there? She must be. Was she still [[smoking|Jackie-Smoking]], or had she [[left|Left]]?

She was probably still smoking, just with someone else. The cops were stupid and easy to outwit. Mary Jane had heard of them giving other people trouble, but she had never had a [[hard time|HardTime]] with them.
[[Four seconds|4]].
And Mary Jane did as [[she said|Vision10]].
Jackie said, “No, you do it [[like this|Vision9]].”
Just like [[everyone else|Vision8]].
The way she [[vanished|Vision7]].
“Every fire begins with a spark,” the Great Smoke told Mary Jane. She didn't know what that meant at [[the time|Time]], but [[she would|Potphecy]].
“All that is [[green|Green]] must turn to ash,” the Great Smoke said, and Mary Jane [[believed|The420Code2]].
The note read, “Dear MJ, I will always [[love|OpenBox-Love]] you. - [[JB|OpenBox-JB]]”
Her [[smile|Vision3]].
Jackie's [[lips|Vision2]].
That's what she had said. But people [[always leave|Jackie-Left]].
The pipe. The pipe meant something to her. She could not [[recall|Treehouse2]].
Mary Jane exhaled, and suddenly, she was [[flying|Flying]].
It was a different kind of [[getting stoned|TakeAHit]], a kind that hurt, a kind that [[broke|Broke]] you. You, and those [[around you|Woods]].
Mary Jane opened the safe, expecting trees or gold or jewels, but instead, she found only a [[small green book|420CodeEnd]].
Jackie's neighbors, reggies with 9-to-5s, the idea that Jackie would care about their opinion, or worse, want to keep up with them, want to cut her grass just right, pull the weeds, and that she would never think about Mary Jane, that was what [[hurt the worst|TakeAHit]].
Where was it, though? And [[where was she|WeirdFeeling]]?
The man, Jackie was drawn toward. Who was he? What did he do? How did he sound? She had only [[this photograph|OpenBox-Vision]].
This was the secret, she knew. The mind was a [[woods|Woods]]. Inside it were powerful secrets for which she [[hungered|Stomach]].
Love? Love was a [[rotten apple|Stomach]].\n\nOr at least that's how it looked in [[the haze|Haze]]. Should she keep looking through [[the Box|OpenBox]]?
